In John chapter 8, we encounter one of the most profound declarations Jesus ever made: 'I am the light of the world.' But this is far more than a poetic statement about illumination. When Jesus says 'I am,' He is reaching back to the very name God revealed to Moses at the burning bush, Yahweh, the self-existent one who has always been and always will be. This means Jesus is not simply someone who carries light or distributes it. He is the source itself. And this changes everything about how we understand our own darkness. When light enters a dark space, darkness does not negotiate or gradually retreat. It scatters. The same is true in our lives. When Christ takes up residence in a human heart, the darkness has no choice but to flee, not because of our strength or moral effort, but because of who He is. This message calls us to move beyond a casual or sentimental view of Jesus and to stand in genuine awe of the one whose glory will illuminate all of eternity, making the sun and moon unnecessary in the new heaven and new earth described in Revelation 21.
