The Good Shepherd: Following the Voice That Leads to Life

What if the name we call God most often in our private prayers reveals something profound about what we truly need? In John chapter 10, we are brought face to face with one of the most intimate and searching images of God in all of Scripture: the Good Shepherd. This passage does not flatter us. It tells us plainly that we are sheep, creatures without sharp instincts for danger, prone to wandering, easily led astray, and utterly dependent on someone wiser and stronger than ourselves. But here is where the message turns from humbling to breathtaking. The shepherd who tends us is not a hired hand who runs when the wolf appears. He is the one who walks ahead of us, who knows us each by name, and who laid down his life voluntarily so that we could find our way home. The cross was not a tragedy that caught heaven off guard. It was plan A from the beginning of time. As we sit with that truth, we are invited to ask ourselves a searching question: are we simply admiring the gate, or have we actually walked through it? Faith is not decoration. It is a decision.
